About FLARE
|
This fall an incredible opportunity has opened up to our ESOL students. Every Tuesday and Wednesday from 2:30 until 5:00 a team of highly qualified professionals are available to assist the students with any academic difficulties. There is help available in Algebra, Geometry, Biology, Physics, History, English, Career Development and Computer Technology, as well as homework assistance. In the afternoon after a complimentary snack the students are bussed home. With such an opportunity now there is no reason for students not to succeed in school. The money for this program is provided through a Title III Federal Grant which Dr. Rozanski, an assistant principle at Central High School, has applied for over the summer and won. The program is coordinated by a team of Mr. Hobson, the chair of the ESOL department, and Mrs. Compton, the chair of the food and consumer science department. Both of them have spent many hours making this experience possible for our students. So what happens in this program? Students arrive at 2:30 to room 111A where they are given a passport. Students use this pass to sign up for two different sessions, which they have to attend. Teachers leading those sessions have to sign this passport. These two signatures serve as an admittance ticket for the afternoon snack and later get exchanged for a bus pass. However, we also know how to have fun. Wednesday 11/16/05 the students explored the American Thanksgiving Holiday through a scavenger hunt. By answering math, science, social studies, and English questions the students were able to gather information about the holiday and write a paragraph based on their new found knowledge. At the conclusion of the program the students were treated to a Thanksgiving feast. In this manner they were able to have fun, review the academic subjects, and learn about American Thanksgiving Holiday.
